The 2.0 Jetta is really slow, but really cheap to maintain and reliable. Like really slow. IMHO...Jetta = better driver ; Camry = more reputable reliability. If you maintain it well, the Jetta will likely be fairly comparable in reliability. I have had three A4 Jettas and one A2. All were very reliable.

Cars that hold value well and cost less in maintenence are going to typically be Honda, Toyota, and Subaru. Just compare costs of what a 19 Jetta is going for vs its MSRP when new, and the 19 Civic, and in just 2 model years you will see that the Jetta is retained a lot less of its value. The strange this is that VW seems to have unveiled pretty much all their MY24 models at least for the US. They even showed off the 24 Atlas and released the embargo on all the test drive of it. 2019 jetta timing belt replacement cost (1.4L) So I just called my local VW dealership and they told it me would be $3,200 to replace the timing belt in my Jetta. I've called other mechanics and many just tell me they won't do it or won't give me a quote. Does $3200 seem outrageous for a timing belt?

A 2011 TDI will serve you well, a Jetta, Golf, or a Jetta wagon, whichever you prefer or can find. Maintenance is low, it's fun to drive and has a few bells and whistles. Will last you a decent amount of time. A manual is preferred, regardless of TDI or gasoline, the DSG automatic gearbox is pretty bad.

They are fairly reliable, I have seen quite a few get to 200K with no maintenance and they have been using it since around 2005. I would personally change the fluid/filter every 50K.
