Downpipe is the single biggest hardware mod for the B58. HPFP being second for the 1st gen BMW engines. The TU HPFP are better. The tune obviously makes a big difference, and octane in the fuel is a large factor as well. The boost level settings of a Stage2 tune are too high for the back pressure generated by the resistance of the stock downpipe. The Stage2 tune tells the turbo to spin faster to a point where that stock back pressure can damage the turbo. A catless downpipe has emissions issues depending on your state's requirements. It also has a gasoline smell.
